ದ ಕ್ಷಿಣ ಭಾರತದ ಕರಾವಳಿ ಪ್ರದೇಶವು ವಿವಿಧ ಜನಸಮುದಾಯಗಳನ್ನು ಒಳಗೊಂಡಂತಹ ಒಂದು ವೈವಿಧ್ಯಮಯ ತಾಣವಾಗಿದೆ. ಈ ಕರಾವಳಿಯ ಹಸಿರು ಬೆಟ್ಟಗಳ ನಡುವೆ, ತನ್ನ ಅಸ್ತಿತ್ವವನ್ನು ಕಾಯ್ದುಕೊಂಡಿರುವ ಒಂದು ಪ್ರಾಚೀನ ಸಮುದಾಯ ಅಂದರೆ ಅದು ಕೊರಗ ಸಮುದಾಯ. ಕಾನನದ ನೆರಳಲ್ಲಿ ಬದುಕು ಕಟ್ಟಿಕೊಂಡು, ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಯೊಂದಿಗೆ ಅವಿನಾಭಾವ ಸಂಬಂಧವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿರುವ ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಭಾರತದ ಈ ಜನಾಂಗ ತಮ್ಮದೇ ಆದ ವಿಶಿಷ್ಟ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿ, ಆಚರಣೆಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಅಂದಹಾಗೆ ಇವರು ಸಮಾಜದಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರತ್ಯೇಕವಾಗಿ ಗುರುತಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಇತಿಹಾಸದ ಪುಟಗಳಲ್ಲಿ “ಅಸ್ಪೃಶ್ಯರು”ಎಂದು ಗುರುತಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟ ಇವರು, ಸಮಾಜದಲ್ಲಿ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಹಿಂದುಳಿದ ಸಮುದಾಯಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಒಬ್ಬರು. ಇವರು ತಮ್ಮ ಮೂಲ ಕಸುಬುಗಳಾದ ಬುಟ್ಟಿಹೆಣೆಯುವುದು, ಅರಣ್ಯದಿಂದ ಕಚ್ಚಾವಸ್ತುಗಳನ್ನು ಸಂಗ್ರಹಿಸುವುದು ಹಾಗೂ ದೈನಂದಿನ ಕೂಲಿಕೆಲಸ ಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ತೊಡಗಿಕೊಳ್ಲುವುದು ಮುಂತಾದವುಗಳಿಂದ ತಮ್ಮ ಜೀವನ ನಿರ್ವಹಣೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಶತಮಾನಗಳ ಕಾಲದ ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಪ್ರತ್ಯೇಕತೆ ಹಾಗು ಸಮುದಾಯದೊಳಗಿನ ವಿವಾಹ ಪದ್ದತಿಯು ಅವರ ಅನುವಂಶಿಕ ಪ್ರತ್ಯೇಕತೆಗೆ ಕಾರಣವಾಯಿತು. ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಪ್ರತ್ಯೇಕತೆಯು ಸಮುದಾಯದ ಒಂದು ಕೆಟ್ಟ ಅಧ್ಯಾಯವಾದರೂ ಅದೇ ವಿಚಾರವು ಅವರನ್ನು ಪ್ರಾಚೀನ ಇತಿಹಾಸದ ಜೀವಂತ ಸಾಕ್ಷಿಗಳಾಗಿ ರೂಪಿಸಿದೆ. ಕರಾವಳಿಯ ಮಣ್ಣಿನಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಕೊರಗ ಸಮುದಾಯದ ಹೆಜ್ಜೆಗುರುತುಗಳು ಶತಮಾನದ ಪರಂಪರೆಯನ್ನು ಸಾರುತ್ತವೆ. ಇದೀಗ ಕೊರಗ ಸಮುದಾಯದ ಜೀನ್...
